Cascais has now become one of the main surfing attractions in Europe with Nazaré beach (an hours drive away) holding the record for Europe's biggest waves.
Carcavelos beach and Guincho beach are the two main surfing beaches, offering all levels and styles the opportunity to practice and perfect their skills. Carcavelos waves are smaller and calmer allow beginners to easily enter the water, test their balance and learn to body board/surf. Guincho on the other hand tends to be choppy waters with great formation and is ideal for the intermediate/experienced surfer.
Carcavelos is located approximately 8 km from Cascais centre towards Lisbon. The beach is about 1 km in length and includes many surf schools along the beach promenade for you to choose from.
Guincho on the other hand has a few surf schools but the beach is equally just as long as Carcavelos. The bonus here is you get a great backdrop view of Sintra Hills.
If surfing isn't your thing, there are many other options available like kite surfing, wind surfing and other more extreme water sports. Just remember to bring your wet suit. The water here is usually a steady 16 ºC!
